Through the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus is presented as the long-awaited king of Israel and the fulfillment of the Davidic throne. Starting with the sermon on the mount, King Jesus lays out what it means to live in his kingdom. However, this kingdom is different than anyone expected. The rich and powerful are humbled, and the lowly are exalted. When someone wrongs you, you are supposed to respond in love. This upside-down kingdom threatens those in power, ultimately leading to the crucifixion of King Jesus on a cross. His disciples are scattered and their hopes for deliverance from Roman oppression are dashed. But then King Jesus is raised from the dead and commissions his followers to go throughout the world and spread the good news of the kingdom of God and the risen King.
